Advantages of questionaires
A
- They are cost effective. They can gather large amounts of data quickly
- It doesn’t require the researcher being present
- Straightforward to analyse

- Responses are not always truthful
- Answering too quickly

A
Similar style questions to questionnaire but the participant answers the question in person

A
- Straightforward to replicate
- Reduces differences between interviewers

A
- Have to stick to the topic which may cause frustration

Unstructured interview
A
May have some preset questions but the interview will be guided by the topic

A
- More flexibility; follow up points they arise

- Researcher may have to ignore lot of irrelevant information
- Interviewers may lie; unreliable

- Standardised; to reduce the contaminating effect of interview bias
- Group interviews may be appropriate in clinical settings (relaxed)
- Ethical issues; interviewers have to treat their answers in the strictest confidence as they may be personal or sensitive
