Research methods in AL (7th reading on classroom) - Research characteristics Flashcards
Research characteristics:
o Based on preexisting rules
o Has consistency (phenomena doesn’t change with time)
o Has uniformity
Systematic
Research characteristics:
o Conceptual: generalizing
o Practical: information is transferred to avoid repetition
Reductive
Research characteristics:
can be applied with a different population
Replicable
Research characteristics:
o Unexpected new questions
o Implies that there’s never an end to the research of the topic
Generative
Research characteristics:
Also…has to make sense. I suppose.
Logical
Description (ex: lang acquisition, functions of lang)
Prediction (ex: L1 development, lang learner’s future achievement)
Improvement (ex: lang instruction or method)
Explanation (ex: lang achievement/failure; making holistic generalization)
Goals of Research
Confirmatory: partial or complete replication of previous research
Exploratory: studying unknown phenomenon, based on trial and error
Kinds of Research
Pure: research for the sake of research
Applied: uses the findings of pure research
Methods of Research
o Pure and fundamental
o Discovery of new knowledge, theoretical in nature
o Take many years to see its practical utility
Basic Research
o Want to solve a central problem
o Improved process/product
o Infers beyond the group or situation studied
o Interpretation of results relies on the basic research
Applied Research
o Phenomenological o Exploratory o Descriptive, inductive, discovery oriented o Process oriented o Naturalistic and controlled observation o Subjective o Valid, real, rich, deep data o Insider perspective o Ungeneralizable
Qualitative Research
o Logical positivism o Confirmatory o Inferential, deductive, verification oriented o Outcome oriented o Obtrusive and controlled measurement o Objective o Reliable, hard, replicable data o Outsider perspective o Generalizable
Quantitative Research
