Ontology
social reality has an independent existence and is not dependent on the knower for its existence. The real world has hard, intangible structures that exist irrespective of our labels.

Realism
They consider hard, objective and tangible knowledge. Can make predictions based on evidence
Realists
everything works based on general laws
Positivism
refers to what concepts our labels we chose to use in order to structure reality.
Methods include discourse analysis, ethnographic work, etc.
Related to qualitative research
Nominalism
anti-positivism. They view society in a subjective light
Nominalists
beliefs that society has unique characteristics like rules, values, symbols, etc. Can have different warrants and perspectives

Flexible and reflective
Observing behavior
Explanation of why and how people act or their beliefs
Data collection strategies: interview transcripts, field notes, recordings, etc.
Types of research: case study, action research, ethnographic research
Qualitative Research
Systematic and empirical
Collection of data is numerical
Data collection strategies: experiments, questionnaires, etc.
Aims of the research: obtain an unbiased result that can represent a larger population than the one sampled
Types of research: surveys, quasi-experiments, correlation studies
Quantitative Research
Qualitative and quantitative work together. Can answer the “how, why, what” of data
