Research Methods: experimental Flashcards
What is an aim?
all studies have an aim; an aim is a general statement of what the research intends to investigate; the purpose of the study.
what is an independent variable?
something that can be changed/manipulated by researcher.
what is a variable?
something that can change/vary.
what is a dependent variable?
something measured by researchers.
what is a hypothesis?
a clear, precise, testable statement that states the relationships between variables to be investigated.
how many types of hypothesis is there?
3
what is a null hypothesis?
when a researcher is confidant that there is no relationship between variables.
what is non directional hypothesis?
researcher is less sure so won’t state a direction or predict a more general outcome.
what is a directional hypothesis?
researcher has good idea of what they think is going to happen so will make a specific outcome and state a direction of the difference or relationship.
is this directional or non directional?
alcohol affects reaction time.
non-directional (no actions)
is this directional or non directional?
the faster you type, the more mistakes you make.
directional
is this directional or non directional?
anxiety affects the level of adrenaline in the blood.
non-directional
tell me what the independent variable and dependant variable of this statement is:
drug A affects memory
IV= drugs DV=memory
tell me what the independent variable and dependant variable of this statement is:
A baby under 9 months of age will not search for hidden objects
IV=different age babies DV=if they search for objects
