research methods Flashcards
experimental designs (3)
repeated measures, matched participants, independent groups.
hypothesis (3)
IV ( variable being manipulated), DV (variable measured), population (group represented by participants)
control group
doesn’t receive IV to compare results of IV with experimental group
experimental group
receives IV
sampling (3)
stratified, random, convenience
random sampling
participants have equal chance of selection but time consuming and expensive
convenience sampling
fast and allows for large sample size but is hard to generalise (biased)
stratified sampling
all characteristics of a population are represented but time consuming
matched participants
participants matched based on characteristics that affect DV. 1 partner C group, 1 partner E group. (fewer participant variables but time consuming & withdrawal from one partner must mean withdrawal from the other)
independent groups
participants allocated to C group or E group. (fast and low cost but participant variables create EVs)
repeated measures
participants allocated to E and C groups. (less participants variables but effect of practice on DV - order effects, and participants may get bored or tired
double blind
participant and experimentor don’t know what group each participant is in
single blind
only participant Is unaware of group they’re in
conclusion
general statement about the results of the study
EV
an unwanted effect that alters the result of the study
