parkinsons Flashcards
1
Q
what is Parkinson’s
A
neurodegenerative disorder that results in chronic changes to the brain and the body. due to a lack in dopamine (neurotransmitter = voluntary movement)
2
Q
treatment
A
levodopa (amino acid taken that turns to dopamine in the brain to ensure adequate levels of dopamine) LCIG (dopamine agonist - acts as dopamine)
3
Q
motor symptoms
A
stiffness/rigidity, pain and discomfort in limbs, constipation and bladder problems, shakiness or tremors in hands and other areas of the body
4
Q
non motor symptoms
A
anxiety, depression, difficulty communicating therefore inability to socialise
5
Q
parts of the brain
A
- deterioration to neurons in substantia nigra (production and release of dopamine). 2. leads to affected corpus striatum (receives messages from substantia nigra to produce smooth muscles movements. 3. basal ganglia (motor control)
