Research Methods Flashcards
What are the types of experiments
Laboratory experiments, Field experiments, Naturalistic experiments and Quasi-experiments
Laboratory experiment
A controlled setting that has high internal validity but lacks ecological validity
Field experiment
This is when an experiment happens in its natural setting. This is when their is higher ecological validity but the experimenter has less control over the extraneous variables.
Natural Experiment
when the iv changes naturally and there is no manipulation. low control but high external validity
What are the types of observation
controlled, naturalistic , covert, overt, participant and non-participant
Controlled observation
This is when the observation happens in structured environment and some variables are controlled by the researcher
Naturalistic observation
this is when behaviour is observed in a naturalistic setting without any manipulation.
Covert observation
the participants dont know that they are being observed- ethical issues
overt observation
the participants know that they are being observed- demand characteristics
Participant observation
Researchers are directly involved in the observation
Non- participant observation
Researcher remains separate from the participants.
What are the two types of self- report techniques
questionnaires and interviews.
questionnaires
open ended - qualitative
closed ended - quantitative
interviews
structured
unstructured
semi-structured
