Research methods Flashcards
What is independent variable?
It is the variable that you manipulate
What is the dependent variable?
It is the variable that you measure
What does it mean by operationalisation?
That the variables are clearly defined- they are testable
What are extraneous variables?
It is the variable that may effect the dependent variable
What are independent group design and what are the weaknesses and strengths?
It is when the participants would be in different groups and only take part in one measure.
Weakness- participant variables, peoples individual differences such as age
Strengths- no order effects, wouldn’t impact second choice as done only once
What are repeated measure design and what are the weaknesses and strengths?
Participants take part in both experiments
Weakness- there are order effects, taking part in first condition could impact your second response
Strengths- there are no participant variables
What are matched pairs design and what are the weaknesses and strengths?
Two groups of participants are matched key characteristics for the study
Weakness-
Strengths-
Field experiment definition and weakness + strengths
The independent variable is in a natural everyday setting but the researcher still manipulates the independent variable
Weakness- ethical issues with consent and you can’t control the extraneous variables
Strengths- valid and authentic as in natural environment and they don’t know they are being tests so cant give socially desirable responses and no demand characteristics
