research methods 1 - research design Flashcards
what are the 5 sampling techniques?
- simple random sampling
- systematic sampling
- stratified sampling
- quota sampling
- snowball sampling
what is the acronym for practical
F - funding
A - access
T - time
S - skills
what is the acronym for ethical
D - deception
R - right to withdraw
I - informed consent
P - privacy
P - protection from harm
what is the acronym for theoretical
P - positivism
I - interpretivism
Q - quantitative
Q - qualitative
key points about positivism
sociology IS a science
- research should be objective
- determinism - society shapes people
- cause and effect
- quantitative data
- reliability and representativeness
key points about interpretivism
sociology is NOT a science
- research should be subjective
- agency - people shape society
- qualitative data
- validity and verstehen
define validity
refers to how far the data gives a true or authentic picture of the worldview of the individuals being studied
define verstehen
to gain an empathetic understanding of the individuals being researched. (put yourself in someone else’s shoes)
define reliability
the extent to which a research method is replicable. there is a standardised procedure, so the research can be replicated to check for consistency (same results)
reliabile = repeat
define representativeness
the sample must have proportionally the same characteristics as the research population.
if the sample is representative, the findings can be generalised to the reseach population
