Research method 1 Flashcards
Quasi-experiment
Extraneous variables
any variables other than the iv that may have an affect on the dv
-dont vary systematically with the iv
E.g lighting of the lab
Confounding variables
any variables other than the iv that may have an affect on the dv so you cannot be sure of the true sources of changes to the dv
-do vary systematically with the iv
E.g personality
Demand charactersitics
cues from the researcher that reveals the purpose of the investigation to the ppt
Investigator effects
effects of the investigators behaviour on the outcome of the research
E.g investigator simling more at some ppt than others
Randomisation
use of chance in order to control for the effects of bias
Natrualistic observation
watching and recording behaviour in the setting in which it would normally occur
Controlled observation
watching and recording behaviour within a structured environment
Covert observation
Participants behaviour is watched and recorder without their knowledge or consent
Overt observation
Participants behaviour is watched and recorder with their knowledge and consent
Participant observation
r[earcher becomes part of the group whos behaviour they are watching
Non-participant observation
researcher remains outside of the group whos behaviour they are watching
Behavioural categories
when a target behaviour is broken up into components that are observable and measurable.
Event sampling
target behaviour or event is established
Time sampling
target individual or group is first established then the researcher records their behaviour in a fixed time frame every 60 seconds
Likert scale
respondent indicates their agreement E.g strongly agree
Rating scale
respondents identify a value that represents their strength of feeling about something
Fixed choice option
respondents pick from a list of possible options what applies to them
Overuse of jargon
using techincal terms that are only familiar to those within a specialised field or area
Double-barrelled questions and double negatives
questions that contains two questions in one
Peer review
the assesment of scientific work by others who are specialists in the same field to ensure that any research intended for publication is of high quality
