Research instrument Flashcards
the degree to which an intrument measures what it is intended or supposed to measure
Validity
5 types of validity
Face Validity
Content Validity
Construct Validity
Concurrent Validity
Predictive Validity
-when an instrument “appears” to measure the variables being studied
-subjective process
-does not ensure actual validity
Face validity
-degree to which an instrument covers a representative sample or element of the variable to be measured
-subjective process
-list of specidications/parts/elements
-the list is provided by experts in the fiels
Content Validity
-degree to which an instrument measures the variables being studied as a whole
-detection of the theoretical aspects or intangible abstract variables such as personality, intelligence, and mood
Construct validity
degree to which an instrument predicts the characteristics of the variable in a certain way throughtl correlation
Criterion validity
predicts results similar to those of a test already validated in the past
Concurrent validity
produces similar results to those of another instrument that will be employed in the future
Predictive Validity
the consistency of the measures of the instrument
Reliability
4 types of reliability
Test-retest reliability
Equivalent forms reliability
Internal Consistency reliability
Inter-rater reliability
-administering an instrument twice to the same grouo of participants and then computing the consistency of the scores
-the retest must be done after a short period of time to record higher correlatin
Test-Retest Reliability
-administering two tests identical in all aspects except the actual wording of the items
-the same coverage, difficulty level, test type, and format
Equivalent Forms Reliability
measures of how well the items in two instruments measure the same construct
Internal Consistency Reliability
The items are divided into two parts
Split-half
reliability with respect to each item
Cronbach’s alpha
