Research Ethics Flashcards
Research Ethics Board
A committee of researchers with the responsibility of protecting human research participants. Weighs possible risks (physical/psychological harm) to participants against the benefits of the research. Studies may have to be rejected or revised.
Informed consent
-informing a potential volunteer about the purposes/tasks/risks involved in a study and obtaining consent without pressure
-info provided: the nature of stimuli, the nature of tasks, potential risks, what the researchers have done to minimize those risks
Define deception
Purposely misleading experiment participants in order to maintain the integrity of the experiment
Anonymity
Data collected cannot be connected to individual participants
Confidentiality
Researchers cannot share specific data or observations that can be connected with an individual (records must be kept secure)
The use of non-human animals
We have the ability to:
-control the influence of heredity (genetic history)
-control the influence of learning
-practicality
-apply procedures that would be considered unethical with humans

Canadian Council on Animal Care
Replacement: refers to methods that avoid/replace the use of animals in an area where animals would have otherwise been used
Reduction: refers to any strategy that will result in fewer animals being used
Refinement: refers to the modification of husbandry or experimental procedures to minimize pain and distress
