BPS code of ethics and conduct four key principles
Respect, competence, responsibility, integrity
respect
- value the dignity and worth of all persons
- sensitivity to the dynamics of perceived authority or influence over participants
competence
- value the continuing development and maintenance of high standards of competence
responsibility
value the responsibility to clients, to the general public, and to the profession and science of psychology
integrity
value honesty, accuracy, clarity and fairness in their interactions with all person
Four principles that specifically govern human research ethics
- respect for the autonomy and dignity of persons
- scientific value
- social responsibility
- maximising benefit and minimising harm
risk
risks should be properly evaluated and participants not exposed to unnecessary risks in the course of research
valid consent
participants consent should be sought prior to conducting research on them
confidentiality
participant’s data should be treated as confidential without an exceptional reason not to
giving advice
caution should be exercised when giving advice to participants in the course of a study
deception
you should not deceive participants without a good reason for doing so, and never without prior ethical approval
debriefing
is generally good practice, and essential in the case of participants who have been deceived
