Research Design Flashcards
What is a research design
Blueprint for procedures of a research project
Why have a research design
Efficiency, correct errors in actual projects, therefore helps reliability of actual
What makes a good research design
- specifies what’s needed
- define times and cost
- procedures and techniques
What should research design include
- reliability
- replication
- validity
What is a continuous variable
A variable that can take an infinite set of values e.g tem
Measured on a continuous numerical scale
NUMBERS
What is a discrete variable
A variable that can only take place within a range e.g symptoms of illness
What is a categorical variable
Categories e.g nationality
Not measured on a continuous numerical scale
What is an extraneous variable
Variables that may impact other variables that have not been accounted for
What is a confounding variable
An unmeasured variable influencing independent and dependent
What is a quasi experiment
- see if dv changes between conditions of iv
- no random allocation to conditions of Iv
What statistical tests can be used for a quasi experiment
- t test
- mann Whitney u test
- Wilcoxon
-ANOVA
What are within and between ppt designs
Repeated measures vs independent measures
What are the advantages and disadvantages of repeated measures
+control ppt variables
Fewer pots, cost
- order effects, need to counterbalance
What are the advantages and disadvantages of independent measures
+ no demand characteristics or order effects
- more pots, ppt variables confound
What is a cross sectional ( social survey) design?
- researchers interested in variations
- data collected at a single point in time
- multiple cases
- qualitative data that can be quantified
