Rationale for treatment
- Mental health-current state
- depression
- IPT
- This study
- Hypothesis
Outline: Participants
- 18-70 from a primary care facility
- Mild to moderate BDI score
- Exclusion criteria: anxiety disorders comorbidity
- MMPI will be used to spot exclusion.
- Suicidal/ homocidal refered
Hypothesis: rationale
Therefore, the hypothesis is that IPT therapy administered by a Masters level intern will statistically decrease symptoms of depression as measured on the Beck depression inventory over the treatment as usual. The null hypothesis is that there is no difference between IPT and treatment as usual.
Outline: Procedure
- Selection of particpants
- particapants will sign informed consent and have read about the study and sign agree to be in the study
- randomly assigned into two groups
- therapist trained for two weeks
- 10 sessions
- recorded and spot checked by supervisior
- after every other session BDI will be adminstered and scores recorded
- 60 particapants.
Outline: Measure
- Beck Depression inventory II (Beck et al., 1996)
- self report instrument
- will be administered under following the instructions in the manual.
- reliable and valid for depression
- MMPI-2 will be given at pretest for exclusion
- for comorbidity
Outline: Variables
- Independant variable is the varible being manipulated; In this case IPT vs. control
- dependant varible: variable being measured
- BDI
Outline: Data Analysis
- An analysis of covarant (ANCOVA) will be used
- need to account for variance
- within group differences
- number of levels
- between group differences
- need to account for variance
- ANCOVA will be used to accounts for the variance in the groups through the use of the pretest as the covariant variable.
- statistical significance is determined (P=.05) then the null hypothesis is rejected.
Outline: Limitations/Threats to Validity
- Internal validity
- external validity
- construct validity
- statistical conclusion validity
Further Research
- specific populations
- ethic groups
- specifc ages
- multiple treamtents: including medications
- longer study’s including post treatment success
*
Internal Validity
- Kazdin, 2009 -balance
- Deals with the ability for the independant variabel to account for the change.
- History, instumentation, maturation- pretest post test design happen at the same time.
- testing-could be a factor, but b/c it is depressionm more likely to be honest
- selection bias- random assignment
- regression toward the mean- similiar scores- mild to moderate (14-28) range. ANCOVA
- attrition- large sample size 60- 30 in each group.
