1st step
Verify that the scene is safe for you and the victim. You do now want to be a victim yourself
2nd step
check for responsiveness.
Tap the victim’s shoulder and shout, “Are you okay?”
3rd step
if victim unresponsive
shout for nearby help
step 4
activate the emergency response system (911)
mobilize code team, advanced life support
step 5
if alone, get the AED/ defibrillator and emergency equipment
if someone else available, send them to get it
step 6
assess the victim for normal breathing and a pulse (simultaneous) - no more than 10 sec.
how to check pulse in adult
palpate carotid pulse
if not breathing/ gasping
with pulse
perform rescue breaths q 5-6 seconds (10-12/ min)
check pulse q 2 mins
confirm that emergency response system has been activated
if opioid use is suspected, consider naloxone if available
normal breathing, + pulse
monitor until emergency responders arrive
no breathing/ only gasping
no pulse
