Required Practicals Flashcards
What is the method for the Preparation of a Soluble Salt practical
-Add 50 cm3 dilute acid into a beaker and warm gently using a Bunsen burner
-Add the insoluble oxide slowly to the hot dilute acid and stir until the base is in excess
-Filter the mixture into an evaporating basin to remove the excess base
-Gently heat the solution in a water bath to evaporate the water and to make the solution saturated
-Leave the filtrate in a warm place to dry and crystallise
-Pat dry the crystals
What is the method for the electrolysis practical
-Add the aqueous solution to the beaker
-Add two graphite rods as the electrodes and connect this to a power pack or battery
-Turn on the power pack or battery and allow electrolysis to take place
-Record the results in a suitable table and repeat for another solution
-The gases produced can be collected in the test tubes to be tested later
What is the method for the energy change practical
-Using a measuring cylinder, place 25 cm3 of the NaOH solution into the polystyrene cup
-Measure and record the temperature of the solution
-Add 5 cm3 of the dilute HCl and stir
-Measure and record the highest temperature reached by the mixture
-Repeat steps 1 – 4 increasing the amount of acid added by 5 cm3 each time
What is the method for the titration practical
-Measure the volume of alkali into a conical flask using a pipette
-Add a few drops of indicator to the solution and swirl
-Add the acid into the burette
-Record the reading on the burette
-Open the tap to release a small amount of acid into the flask
-Swirl the flask
-Repeat step 4 until the solution changes colour
-Repeat the titration 3 times to get concordat results
