Q

What is the method to measure the production of a gas

A

-support a gas syringe with a stand, boss and clamp
-using a measuring cylinder add 50cm^3 of dilute HCL to a conical flask
-add 0.4g of calcium carbonate to the flask
-immediately connect the gas syringe and start a stop clock
-every 10 seconds record the volume of gas produced
-repeat steps with different concentrations of Hydrochloric acid

Q

What is the method for the identifying the ions in an ionic compound using a flame test

A

-Take a piece of nichrome wire with a loop at one end
-dip the loop in the concentrated hydrochloric acid and place it in the blue flame of the Bunsen burner
-repeat until the flame is no longer coloured
-dip the clean nichrome wire in concentrated hydrochloric acid and the wire onto the solid ionic compound
-hold the loop with the solid ionic compound in the hottest part of the flame and record the characteristic colour
-repeat for all the solid ionic compound available

Q

What is the method for the identifying the ions in an ionic compound using a precipitation test

A

-Add metal cations to a test tube
-add sodium hydroxide slowly drop wise to the test tubes
-a precipitate should form
-add excess sodium hydroxide to dissolve the precipitate
-note the colour of the dissolved precipitate and identify the metal ion
-calcium and magnesium ions produce white precipitates when NaOH is added therefore you need to use a flame test to identify the metal ions in the solution

Q

What is the method to test for Hallie ions

A

-add chlorine, bromide and iodide solutions to separate test tubes
-add four drops of nitric acid
-add silver nitrate solution
-a white precipitate indicates the presence of chloride ions
-a cream precipitate indicates the presence of bromide ions
-a yellow precipitate indicates the presence of iodide ions

Q

What is the method for the chromatography practical

A

-draw a pencil line across the chromatography paper, 1 - 2 cm from the bottom
-use a pipette to add small spots of each ink to the line on the paper
-place the paper into a container with a suitable solvent in the bottom allow the solvent to move through the paper, but remove the chromatogram before it reaches the top
-allow the chromatogram to dry, then measure the distance travelled by each spot and by the solvent
