Required Practical - Paper Chromotography Flashcards
1
Q
Why is the baseline drawn in pencil and not pen?
A
Pencil marks are insoluble, ink will dissolve in the solvent and the baseline will move up the paper with the solvent.
2
Q
Why do you have to make sure the baseline doesn’t touch the solvent?
A
So the ink spots don’t dissolve in the solvent
3
Q
Why do you place a lid on top of the container?
A
To stop the solvent evaporating
4
Q
How do you calculate Rf Value
A
RF = Distance travelled by substance / Distance travelled by solvent
