Required practical - making soluable salts Flashcards
What does soluble mean?
Able to dissolve in solvent. For example, sugar is soluble in water because it dissolves to form sugar solution.
What is insoluable?
Unable to dissolve in a particular solvent. For example, sand is insoluble in water.
What does the soluble salt practical involve?
This required practical involves the preparation of a pure, dry sample of a
soluble salt from an insoluble oxide or carbonate using a Bunsen burner to heat dilute acid and a water bath or electric heater to evaporate the solvent
What are the methods of separation used in the soluble salt practical?
Crystallisation , filtration and evaporation
What are some safety points to consider during the practical?
Wear eye protection, mix chemicals carefully and properly
What is the aim of the soluble salt practical?
To prepare a pure, dry sample of a soluble salt from an insoluble oxide or carbonate.
What points do you need to consider when planning the soluble salt practical?
- which apparatus to use, and diagrams showing how it will be set up
- which reagents to use
- a consideration of hazards, risks and precautions
What apparatus is needed to mix the solid and acid in the soluble salt practical?
a beaker and stirring rod
What apparatus is needed to filter the mixture in the soluble salt practical?
Filter paper, filter flask , conical flask
What apparatus is needed to heat the mixture in soluable salt practical?
bunsen burner, evaporation basin , water bath
What apparatus is needed for crystallisation in the soluble salt practical?
Watch glass
What must the solid do in the soluble salt practical?
- include the correct metal ions
- react with the acid
- be insoluble in water
What are three hazards contained in the soluble salt practical?
- hydrochloric acid
- bunsen burner and hot appartuses
