Group 7 - the halogens Flashcards
What is another name for the elements in group 7?
The halogens
Are group 7 elements metals or non metals?
non metals.
How many electrons do group 7 elements have in their outer shell?
7.
What is a covalent bond?
When two non-metal atoms share a pair of electrons.
What happen as we move down group 7?
- melting and boiling point increase
- relative molecular mass increases
What is a compound in chemistry?
Substances formed by two or more elements. They are held together by chemical bonds.
How do atoms make bonds?
giving away, taking or sharing electrons.
How do you separate original elements of a compound?
a chemical reaction
What is ionic bonding?
- a compound of a metal and a non metal
- the metal looses electrons to form positive ions
- non metals gain electrons to form negative ions.
- The opposite charges mean they are strongly attracted to each other.
What are some examples of compounds which are bonded ionically?
- sodium chloride
- magnesium oxide
- calcium oxide
examples of compounds that are bonded covalently?
- hydrogen chloride gas
- carbon monoxide
- water
What happens when the group 7 elements become less reactive?
the outer shell is further from the nucleus so its harder to gain an extra electron
what do halogens form when they bond with metals?
-1 ions called halides
What happens between a more reactive halogen and less reactive halogen?
a displacement reaction will happen between the more reactive halogen and the salt of a less reactive one.
