REQUIRED PRACTICAL- IV characteristics Flashcards
WHAT IS THE AIM OF THE PRACTICAL?
To use circuit diagrams to construct appropriate circuits to investigate IV characteristics using equation R= I/V
WHAT IS THE INDEPENDENT VARIABLE?
the voltage across the circuit
WHAT IS THE DEPENDENT VARIABLE?
the current flowing through it
WHAT IS THE CONTROL VARIABLE?
the temperature of the circuit
EXPLAIN HOW TO CARRY OUR PRACTICAL FOR A FIXED RESISITOR?
1) Set up circuit with wires in the right way for a positive reading
2) using variable resistor set current to 0 and increase every time
to 0.01 and record the voltmeter recording
3) Continue doing this increasing by 0.01 till you get to 0.05 then flip wires for negative reading and repeat
4) DRAW GRAPH
WHAT DOES THE GRAPH FOR A FIXED RESISTOR ON AN IV GRAPH REPRESENT?
OHMS LAW: That if resistance is constant current is directly proportional to potential difference
WHAT ARE COMPONENTS THAT FOLLOW OHMS LAW CALLED?
Ohmic conductors
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE GRADIENT OF THE LINE WHEN RESISTANCE IS INCREASED?
gradient gets less steep
EXPLAIN HOW TO CARRY OUT PRACTICAL FOR A FILAMENT LAMP?
1) Set up circuit making sure wires are in correct way for a positive reading
2)Using variable resistor set current to 0 amps and increase by 0.01 , recording the potential difference
3) Do this to 0.05 then flip wires for negative result and repeat to -0.05
4) DRAW GRAPH
WHAT DOES GRAPH FOR A FILAMENT LAMP ON AN IV CHARACTERISTIC GRAPH REPRESENT?
Filament lamps will eventually heat up as more current flows through
it and light intensity increases. As a result of this temperature increases which means so does resistance
CURVE GETS LESS STEEP AS RESISTANCE DUE TO TEMPERATURE INCREASES SO LESS CURRENT CAN FLOW THROUGH LAMP
WHAT EXTRA PIECE OF EQIPMENT DO YOU NEED WHEN COMPLETING THIS EXPERIMENT WITH A DIODE?
milliampshunt- as ammeter recordings become very delicate and sensitive
EXPLAIN HOW TO CARRY OUT PRACTICAL FOR DIODE?
1) Set up circuit making sure wires are right way for positive reading
2)set voltage to 0 using variable resistor increase by 0.05 this time
3) keep increasing to one volt and record P.D
4) remember to plat milliamps when DRAW GRAPH
ON AN IV GRAPH FOR A DIODE WHY IS THERE ONLY A KINE IN A POSITIVE SECTION?
because diodes make current only travel one way
