Required Practical 8 (waves) Flashcards
Ripple Tank Prcatical
Ripple tank is used to observe the features of water waves. It is a shallow tray of water, in the water there’s a vibrating bar connected to a power pack. When the bar vibrates it creates waves across the surface of the water. Over the ripple tank is a lamp and below is 1 sheet of white paper, when the light shines through the water it makes an image on the paper.
Use a phone to record + slow / stop the image to observe the wave pattern on the paper.
To measure the wavelength place a ruler on the paper and freeze the image of the waves, measure the distance of the wavelengths on the paper and divide by the no° of wavelengths added together to get an average (mean)
Frequency :
Place a timer next to the paper and count the number of waves passing a point in 10s and divide by 10 to get no° of waves passing the point in 10s, record and watch in slow motion (remember to record time as well).
Speed:
Wave equation
Waves In a Solid Practical
There’s a sting with 1 end attached to a vibration generator, the otehr end has a hanging mass (keeps string tight). Vibration generator is attached to a signal generator, allowing us to change the frequency of the vibrations. When we turn on the power the string vibrates.
At a certain point you get a standing wave.
Measure the wavelength of the standing wave with a ruler, measure from wood bridge to vibration generator.
Then can use speed of wave (using equation) v = f (wave generator) x wavelength
The wavelength depends on the tightness of the string and mass/cm
Wave speed meaning
The speed energy is transferred through the medium
