Why do we carry out dissections?
To get a complete understanding of the internal biological functions of organisms.
What are the ethical issues associated with classroom dissections?
- How the animal disscted was raised.
- How the animal dissected was killed
- Whay the animal was killed (for dissection or as a product of the meat industry).
What is a biohazard?
Biohazards are defined as any biological or chemical substance that is dangerous to humans, animals, or the environment. This can include body fluids, human tissue and blood.
How is the risk due to biohazrds reduced?
- The sample is kept on the dissection board.
- The area touched by the sample is disinfected.
- Gloves are used.
- Hands are washed with soap.
What risk is associated with the use of disinfectants?
Some disinfectants are flammable so much be kept away from flames.
How is the hazard caused by the use of sharp tool reduced?
- Always cut away from yourself.
- Use forceps to hold tissue being cut.
What should you wear when carrying out a dissection?
Lab coat, gloves and safety glasses.
Give 10 rules for scientific drawing
- Use a sharp HB pencil
- Make sure drawing is large enough for detail and labels (at least half a page advisable)
- No shading
- Use single and continuous lines (no sketching)
- Label lines should be drawn with a ruler
- Do not cross label lines
- Lines should not have any arrows
- Label all the structures
- Do not use colour
- Include a magnification/scale
