required practical 5 : density Flashcards
1
Q
describe how to measure density in a regular shaped object
for example
, a cube
A
- Use the balance to determine the mass
(e. g. the cube is 0.5kg)
-measure the length of the side with a ruler to work out the volume. length side cubed = volume of a cube
(e.g. length of each side is 0.12m
so 0.12m^3 is 0.001728
-density = mass/volume
density = 0.5/0.001728
= 289.35 kg/m^3

Q
describe how to determine the volume of an irregular shaped object
A
- find the mass of the object using a balance
- fill a eureka van with water. the eureka can has a spout so water can flow out of the can and into a measuring cylinder
- place the object into the water. This will cause the water to be displaced and flow out of the can through the spout
- measure the volume of water displaced(using a measuring cylinder) This volume is the same as the volume of the object
