Required Practical 1✔️ (thermal Insulation) Flashcards
Explain steps 1 and 2 for the method?
1)Place a small beaker into a larger beaker (with the gap between filled with insulation) -
Fill the small beaker with hot water from a kettle
2)Put a piece of cardboard over the beakers as a lid (should have a hole suitable for a thermometer)
Explain steps 3 and 4 for the method?
3)Place a thermometer into the smaller beaker through the hole and record the temperature of the water and start the stopwatch
4)Record the temperature of the water every 2 minutes for 20 minutes
Explain step 5 for the method?
5)repeat each step again, each time packing the space between the large and small beaker with chosen insulating materials - then plot a graph of temp against time
Give 2 hazards and control measures?
- boiling water which could scald skin prevented by not overfilling the kettle, if scalded wash hand under cold water
- knocking beaker off the desk - could scald skin which can be prevented by placing the beaker away from the edge
What is the aim of the experiment?
To compare the effectiveness of different materials as thermal insulators
Give a list of the equipment needed?
- thermometer
- stopwatch
- piece of card
- large beaker
- small beaker
- insulating materials
What are the control variables?
- volume of water
- starting temperature of the water
- time
What is the independent variable?
- Insulating material used
- number of layers around the large beaker
What is the dependent variable?
The temperature of the water
How can the experiment be improved to measure thickness?
By wrapping the large beaker in a sheet of newspaper and repeating steps 1 to 5, by adding another layer of newspaper until there are 10 layers of newspaper
