When did people established The Republic of China?
After the communists defeated the Nationalists in China in 1949. Nationalists flew to Taiwan where they established it.
What is martial law?
A government maintained by military power.
During martial law of Taiwan, what did Nationalist leaders claimed?
They claimed that they had authority over all China, including the mainland.
In 1987 more political parties were allowed to take part in elections and lifted martial law. What happened as a result to people?
People on the island were able to experience more democratic freedom.
How does China consider Taiwan nowadays?
Mainland China considers Taiwan as one of its provinces. It has chosen not to challenge Taiwan, as long as it doesn’t declare its independence.
What has fueled the growth of Taiwan’s GDP?
Exports have been fundamental for its growth. Taiwan depends so much in exports than the economy declines when world demand for its goods decreases.
What are some exports of Taiwan? What is something that could help but is limited?
Electronics and machinery. Farming is limited because much of the country is covered by mountains.
What has improved economic cooperation between China and Taiwan and may also lead better diplomatic relations?
Chinese investors have been able to directly invest in Taiwan and also Taiwanese financial films have opened in mainland China.
In 1990 why did Japan’s economic growth began to slow down?
Many businesses of the country had borrowed huge amounts of money and were deeply in debt. With little capital, production declined.
What means capital in the aspect of money?
Money of investment.
In the 2000’s Japan’s economy began to recover. However, then the progress was halted. Why?
- Worldwide economic downturn, which led to a decrease of the demand of Japanese exports
- Many industries suffered because of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
In what is most of Japan’s economy invested?
77% in service industries and 22% in manufacturing.
What does Japan’s economy heavily depends on?
Japan imports must of its raw materials needed for its industries.

- Other electronics
Compared to other Asian countries and exporters how is Japan different?
It hasn’t promoted free trade with its neighbors as well as the others, which makes Japan’s exports more expensive than the others with free trade agreement.
What is free trade?
It is trade that does not impose tariffs or taxes on imports.
