reproductive system disorder Flashcards
disorders of the vulva
vulvitis, folliculitis, bartholin cyst, vulvar carcinoma
vulvitis
inflammation and pruritus (itching) of the vulva, not considered a specific disease, typically accompanies other local and systemic disorder
cause of vulvitis
irritating vaginal discharge, overgrowth of candida albicans (yeast) , component of STD
folliculitis
infection that involves the hair follicles of the mons or labia majora
manifestation of folliculitis
small red papules/pustules surrounding the hair shaft
causes of folliculitis
density of bacteria in this area, occlusive nature of clothing covering the genitalia
Bartholin cyst
fluid filled sac that results from the occlusion of the duct system in the Bartholin gland
cause of bartholin cyst
cyst infected by staphylococcal, chlamydial, anaerobic infection
treatment for bartholin cyst
administration of appropriate antibiotics, local application of moist heat, incision and drainage
vulvar carcinoma in younger women
related to human papillomavirus infection
vulvar carcinomas in older women
often preceded by non-neoplastic disorder such as chronic vulvar irritation/lichen sclerosus, lesion cause itching and repeated injury, healing cells are more likely to mutate
disorders of the vagina
vaginitis, vaginal infections, cancer of the vagina
vaginal infections
candidiasis, trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis
vaginosis
strong odor vaginal discharge
characteristics of vaginitis
discharge, burning sensation, itching, redness, swelling, pain with urination/intercourse
vaginitis caused by
infections, chemical irritants, foreign bodies, poor hygiene
atrophic vaginitis caused by
lack of estrogen: less regeneration of vaginal epithelium, changes to normal flora, less acidity in secretions, dry vagina
candidiasis caused by
Candida albicans yeast infection: decreased normal bacterial flora, increased estrogen/progesterone levels, decreased immune system activity
candidiasis results in
inflammation, pruritus, thick odorless discharge
treatment for candidiasis
antifungals
bacterial vaginosis
imbalance of normal vaginal bacterial flora
bacterial vaginosis leads
thin gray-white/ green discharge with fishy odor, burning upon urination
treatment for bacterial vaginosis
treated only if symptomatic/associated with other risk conditions
bacterial vaginosis risk factors
multiple sex partners, douching, antibiotics treatment due to effect on normal flora
