Reproductive System Flashcards
what are the male and female haploid cells?
male = spermatozoa female = oocyte or ovum
where are haploids produced?
gonads, male = testes, female = ovaries
where does fertilisation usually take place?
the ampulla of the uterine tube
what is the pelvic floor?
the internal wall of skeletal muscle, spears the pelvic cavity and the perineum
what is the perineum?
inferior to the pelvic floor, between proximal parts of lower limbs
what is the opening to the pelvic floor?
distal alimentary, reproductive and renal tracts can pass through
what is the pelvic roof?
formed by parietal peritoneum, membrane that can secrete fluid, helps lubrication
what is the parietal peritoneum?
lining of the abdominal cavity, firmly attached walls and drapes over pelvic viscera
what are the three layers of the uterus walls?
perimetrium, myometrium, endometrium
in each menstrual cycle where does the ovum go?
from the ovaries into the peritoneal cavity, gathered into fimbriae into infundibulum of uterine tube, moved by cilia and expelled by contraction to the myometrium
where does implantation occur?
uterus
what is an ectopic pregnancy?
when a fertilised ovum implants out-with the uterine cavity
forms of female sterilisation?
tubal ligation, both uterine tubes, clipped, cut or cauterised or block the lumen
what is the tube that sperm pass through connecting the testes to almost the urethra ?
the vas deferens
what is the development of sperm called?
spermatogenesis
where are sperm produced?
seminiferous tubules, develop in the testes
what is the pathway of sperm in men?
seminiferous > rete testis > head of epididymis > becomes vas deferens
what does the spermatic cord contain?
vas deferens, testicular artery, pampiniform plexus of veins
what is torsion of the testes?
twisting the spermatic cord, disrupting blood supply, severe pain, danger of testicular necrosis
what are the male accessory reproductive organs?
the vas deferens, seminal glands, prostate gland and penis
where are the testes located?
scrotum
where does the spermatic cord pass through?
the anterior abdominal wall within the inguinal canal to reach the pelvic cavity
where do the left and right ejaculatory ducts join?
within the prostate gland, inferior to the bladder, draining into the urethra
form of male sterilisation?
vasectomy, the vas deferens is transected and its lumen sutured closed
