Reproductive System Flashcards
What does the bony pelvis consist of?
2 hip bones ( also known as innominate or pelvic bones)
Sacrum
Coccyx
What are the 4 articulations within the pelvis
Sacroiliac joints (2): between the ilium of the hip bones and the sacrum
Sacrococcygeal symphysis: between the sacrum and the coccyx
Pubic symphysis: between the pubis bodies of the two hip bones
What are the two parts of the pelvic region?
Greater pelvis (false pelvis)
Lesser pelvis (true pelvis)
What is the pelvic inlet?
Is the junction between the greater and lesser pelvis.
What is the pelvic brim?
The outer bony edges of the pelvic inlet
What are the ligaments found in the pelvis?
Sacrospinous ligament and sacrotuberous ligament
What do the ligaments in the pelvis form?
Greater sciatic foramen and the lesser sciatic foramen
What is the pelvic floor formed by?
The levator ani and coccygeus muscles
What are the 3 muscle fibres found in the levator ani muscle?
Iliococcygeus
Pubococcygeus
Puborectalis
What is the perineal membrane?
A thick fascial, triangular structure attached to the bony framework of the pubic arch
What are the 3 main components of the anal triangle?
Anal aperture: opening of the anus
External anal sphincter muscle: voluntary muscle; responsible for opening and closing of anus
Ischioanal fassas (2): spaces located laterally to the anus
What is the female reproductive organs
Ovaries
Uterine
Uterus
Vagina
Vulva
What is a Episiotomy?
Is a surgical cut in the perineum that helps prevent tear of perineal body
What extra components do u find in female perineal pouch compared to males?
Sphincter urethrovaginalis and compressor urethrae
Where is the superficial perineal pouch and what does it contain?
Space between the perineal membrane (superiorly) and the superficial perineal fascia.
It contains erectile tissue and 3 muscles:
Ischiocavernosus
Bulbospngiousus
Superficial transverse perineal
What is the perineal body?
Is an irregular fibromuscular mass located at the junction of the urogential and anal triangle. (Next to the anus and the vagina)
What is the two types of episiotomy
Midline and mediolateral
What are the components of the fallopian tube?
Frimbriae- finger like projections to capture the ovam from the ovaries
Infundibulum- funnel shaped opening near the ovary (attached to frimbriae)
Ampulla- widest section of the tube. This is where fertilization occurs
Isthmus- narrow section of tube connecting to ampulla
What is the uterus and its three parts?
Thick walled muscular organ where fetus is grown
Fundus- top part of uterus. Entry for fallopian tube
Body- site for implantation of blastocyst
Cervix- lower part of uterus
What are the functions of the vagaina
Sexual intercourse
Childbirth
Menstruation
Components of the vulva?
Mons pubis
Labia minora
Vestibule
Clitoris
Components of male reproductive organs?
Testes
Epididymis
Seminal vesicles
Prostate
Penis
What is the function and location of the testes and epididymis?
Found within the scrotum. Tetes is the site of sperm production and hormone synthesis and epidiymis is storage for sperm
What is the major structures of the spermatic cord?
Testicular artery
Panpiniform plexus of veins
Vas deferens- ducts that transport sperm
What are seminal vesicles?
Pair of glands found in the male pelvis which produce many of the stuff found in semen
What is a prostate and its function?
Is the latgest acessory gland in the male repro and it secretes proteolytic enzymes
Anatomical divisions of the penis?
Root- fixed mart of the penis located in the superficial perineal pouch of the pelvic floor
Body- free part of the penis
Glans- most distal part of penis contains opening of urethra
What is vasectomy and how is it done?
Surgical procedures for male sterilization.
During this process the vas deferens are cut tied
