Reproductive Strategies Flashcards
What does oviparous mean ?
They repoduce by laying fertilised zygotes (eggs) , which means they develop with little or no embryonic development in the mother
What does viviparous mean?
This is when the larva or newborn does the growth within side the maternity body until the young is capable of independent existence. The maternal helps the embryo to continue to grow.
What does oviparous mean?
Producing eggs that hatch within the body, meaning they are born alive. They however don’t have placental attachment.
Parthenogenesis
Asexual reproduction (only one parent) where an embryo develops from an unfertilised egg, without male involvement which creates a genetic clone of the parent.
What is a Hermaphrodite
An animal that has both male and female genitalia
What are the two situations where Parthenogenesis occurs?
Female asexual reproduction
Hermaphrodites - one individual both produces and fertilises the egg
