Reproductive/ Respiratory System Flashcards
1
Q
What are the male organs?
A
- Testes
- Seminal vesicles
- Vas deferens (sperm ducts)
2
Q
What are the female organs?
A
- Ovaries
- Oviducts
- Seminal receptacles
3
Q
[Step 1]
When does copulation occur?
A
Copulation occurs between worms when they lie ventral surface to ventral surface with their heads pointing in opposite directions.
4
Q
[Step 2]
What is the clitellum?
A
- A smooth girdle-like area around the worm body.
- It secretes mucus that holds the worms together.
5
Q
[Step 3]
What is the function of the mucus?
A
- Holds the worms together during copulation.
- Provides moisture through which sperm swim from one body to the other where they are stored in the seminal receptacles.
6
Q
[Step 4]
After the worms separate:
A
The clitellum of each produces a slime tube or cocoon that is moved over the anterior end of each worm by muscular contractions.
7
Q
[Step 5]
As the slime tube passes:
A
sperm from seminal receptacles received during copulation & eggs from the female pores are deposited and fertilization occurs.
8
Q
[Step 6]
Function of cocoon?
A
- Protects worms as they develop into juveniles.
- There is no larval stage.
9
Q
Respiratory System?
A
- There is no specialized system.
- The moist skin layer permits diffusion of O2 + CO2.
