Digestive System Flashcards
Where is the mouth located?
At the anterior end just below the lobelike projection called the prostomium.
Where is the alimentary canal? What is it differentiated into?
- In the anterior part of the body.
- Mouth + buccal cavity + pharynx + esophagus + crop + gizzard + intestines.
From segment 19 ___
the intestine continues without modification to the anus.
How is food taken in?
Food is taken into the mouth by suction & passes through the pharynx to the esophagus.
What happens in the esophagus? And then?
- Calciferous glands secrete CaCO3 into food that neutralizes the organic acids present.
- Food is then passed to the crop.
What is a crop?
a thin walled storage organ
From the crop, food passes into:
the thick walled muscular gizzard where food is thoroughly ground.
Where does food go from the gizzard?
The ground food is then passed to the intestine where most of the digestion and absorption occur.
What is a typhlosole?
An expanded region in the dorsal surface of the intestine.
What is the function of the typhlosole?
Increases the area of absorption and secretion.
Secretions contain _____
digestive enzymes that break down basic foods that are absorbed by the intestinal wall.
What happens to undigested material?
It is voided through the anus in the form of castings.
