Detecting oestrus in cows
- Should observe at least 3 times a day.
- Need to observe for longer than 30 mins at a time as there are a range of intermittent behaviours which should be detected.
- Observe when socialising normally (i.e not when milking or in collection yard)
- Ovulation is 10-15 hours after standing oestrus
- Behavioural signs of oestrus is standing to be mounted/mounting the head of another cow (primary) or secondary signs include cajoling, increased activity, chin resting, mounting other cows
- Physiological changes include mucoid vulval discharge (bulling string), swollen vulva and reduced milk yield
