Reproduction and Development Flashcards
What are the testes?
.the male gonads, or primary reproductive organs; male sex hormones and sperm are produced in the testes
What are the ovaries?
.the female gonad, or reproductive organ; female sex hormones and egg cells are produced in the ovary
Define fertilization
-fusion of the male and female sex cell
What are the zygote, embryo, and the fetus?
Zygote: cell resulting from the union of a male and female sex cell
Embryo: the early stages of an animal’s development
Fetus: the later stages of and unborn offspring’s development
What is the scrotum?
.the sac that contains the testes
What is the vas deferens?
.tube that conducts sperm toward the urethra
What is the ejaculatory duct?
.a tubule formed at the union of the vasa deferentia and the seminal vesicle ducts and opening into the urethra
What is semen?
.(seminal fluid) a secretion of the male reproductive organs that is comprised of sperm and fluids
What are the seminiferous tubules?
.coiled ducts found within the testes, where immature sperm cells divide and deferentiate
What is a Sertoli cell?
.a cell that provides metabolic and mechanical support to developing sperm cells
What is the epididymis?
.structure located along the posterior border of the testes, consisting of coiled tubules that store sperm cells (the boot camp)
What is the acrosome?
.the cap found on sperm cells, containing enzymes that permit the sperm cell to move through the outer layers that surround the egg
Where are parts of the seminal fluid produced?
The seminal vesicle, prostate gland, and the Cowper’s (bulbourethral) gland
