Reproduction Flashcards
Uterus
Where the fetus will develop
Oviduct
Tube which egg travels along on the way to the uterus
Ovary
Where eggs are stored and then released from here
Cervix
Small opening between the uterus and the vagina
Lining of the uterus
Thickens every month in order to receive a fertilised egg
Vagina
Sperm enter the body here
Penis
Becomes erect when it fills with blood
Testis
Where the sperm are made
Scrotum
Holds the testis
Sperm duct
The sperm travels along here
Glands
These add fluid to help the sperm swim
Urethra
Sperm leave the body through this TUBE
How are sperm adapted to swim to the egg and fertilise it
They have tails which propel them forward and they are streamline allowing them to cut through the water
How is the egg adapted and why?
The egg has a jelly like coating to protect theirselves and they have food stores
How are sperm and egg cells similar
They both are cells and have DNA
How are sperm and egg cells different
Sperm is thirty times smaller than an egg cell
The egg cell is round and doesn’t leave the females body as a single cell
How does embryo develop
Day. 0. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
Number 1. 2.4. 8. 16.32.64.128. 256
of cells
After eight weeks the embryo turns into a fetus
What are the three basic types of twins?
Conjoined twins
Non identical twins
And identical twins
How are non identical twins formed
When two eggs are fertilised by two sperm non identical twins are born
How are conjoined twins formed
Are identical twins where the embryo has failed to split fully leaving half of the fetus attatched to the other
How are identical twins formed
One egg that is fertilised by one sperm.
The embryo splits fully in two
Pregnancy do’s
Eat Rest Exercise gently Be in touch with a doctor Avoid stress Avoid harsh impact to the belly
Pregnancy donts
Smoke Drink alcohol Take drugs Eat unpasteurised food Catch bad diseases
Smoking in pregnancy
Reduced nutrients and oxygen for the baby.
Greater chances of problems like genetics, eyes, spinal cord etc. Can be effected.
Puberty on boys
Penis grows Shoulders get wider Voice deepens Chest hair Testis produces sperm
Puberty on boys and girls
Body smells Underarm hair grows Increased growth rate Sweat Pubic hair Emotions change Oily skin
Puberty in girls
Hips widen
Breasts grow
Ovaries release eggs
The menstrual cycle
How long?
What happens?
Usually happens for around 28 days
The cycle happens to prepare for the egg and then release all the left over lining
What happens in the menstrual cycle in days 1 to 5
The uterus lining is shed and a small amount of blood is released, this is called a woman’s period
What happens in the menstrual cycle in days 6 to 12
The lining of the uterus starts to grow and the egg ripens in the ovary.
What happens in the menstrual cycle from day 13 to day 15?
An egg is released from one of the two ovaries.
What happens in the menstrual cycle from day 16 to 28
The egg travels down the Fallopian tube and the lining of the uterus continues to thicken.
The egg dies if it hasn’t been fertilised and by day 27 the lining of the uterus will have started to break down
