What does the averages or ranges look like for puberty ages and ECL/EL?
The ranges for ECL and especially EL are very high, but the averages are similar across different species. Lots of variation with ovulation time too
What are the four types of mating systems?
Pasture mating, live cover, artificial insemination, embryo transfer
Pasture mating, what is it and pros/cons?
Males seek out females when in heat and can reproduce naturally. This creates less stress on the animals but makes it harder to keep up with the timeline of conception
Live cover, what is it and pros/cons?
Two animals put together by humans, but are still doing the insemination themselves. This is what is required for thoroughbreds by the jockey club. Easier to have timeline and inseminate several females at once. More stress though which will decrease libido and likelihood to perform.
Artificial insemination, what is it and pros/cons?
When a female is in heat, they are inseminated by humans. Sperm can be extracted and sent all over the world. Semen and eggs can also be stored/frozen even after the animal is dead. This decreases disease risk and reduces safety concerns for both people and animals. However this is still new technology so it is expensive.
Embryo transfer, what is it and pros/cons?
Pumping the female full of hormones, to increase egg production and ability for the uterus to hold the eggs. Eggs are fertilized by sperm then extracted when the uterus is flooded, these embryos can then be transplanted into surrogates. Fertile females may not be good mothers or able to carry to term, this allows for both sides of the coin to be possible. It is very veritable on how many eggs will be collected and is still very costly. BEST WAY TO ACCELERATE GENETICS.
