Reproduction Flashcards
Asexual reproduction
There is only one parents involved
New offspring is usually made by mitosis (cell division)
The offspring are clones of the parent
Reproduction without fertilisation
No genetic variation
Sexual reproduction
Fertilisation (fusion) of two haploid gametes
Animal gametes:
female sex cell (egg)
male sex cell (sperm).
Plants gametes:
female sex cell (egg)
male sex cell (pollen)
Diploid
Two sets of chromosomes - 46
Fertilised gametes (zygotes) are diploid
Haploid
One set of chromosomes - 23
In humans, only gametes are haploid
Zygote
Once fertilisation has taken place a single cell (unicellular) is made called a zygote
Fertilisation
Fusion of two haploid gametes
Embryo
A ball of cells formed after mitosis has occurred
(multicellular)
