reproduction Flashcards
Asexual reproduction
Asexual reproduction is the process resulting in the production of genetically identical offspring from one parent, without the fusion of gametes
Sexual reproduction
Sexual reproduction is the process involving the fusion of the nucleus of a haploid male gamete and the nucleus of a haploid female gamete to form a diploid zygote, resulting in the production of genetically dissimilar offspring.
Gamete
A gamete is a reproductive cell containing haploid number of chromosomes
Fertilisation
Fertilisation is the process involving the fusion of the nucleus of a haploid male gamete and the nucleus of a haploid female gamete to form a diploid zygote.
Pollination
Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma
Self-pollination
Self-pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma of the same flower or of a different flower of the same plant.
Cross-pollination
Cross-Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther of one plant to the stigma of a flower in another plant of the same species.
Menstruation
Menstruation is the monthly discharge of blood from the uterus via the vagina due to the breakdown of the uterine lining.
Ovulation
Ovulation is the release of a mature ovum from the ovary around day 14 of the menstrual cycle.
Implantation
Implantation is the process where an embryo becomes embedded in the uterine lining.
