nutrition in humans Flashcards
Digestion
Digestion is the process by which large, insoluble food molecules are broken down into small, soluble and diffusible molecules that can be absorbed by the body cells.
Physical digestion
Physical digestion is the mechanical break up of food into smaller parts to increase surface area to volume ratio to speed up enzyme action.
Chemical digestion
Chemical digestion is a process whereby enzymes digest large, insoluble food molecules into smaller, soluble molecules that can be absorbed into body cells.
Absorption
Absorption is the process where digested food substances such as glucose and amino acids are taken into the body cells.
Assimilation
Assimilation is the process where some of the absorbed food substances are converted into new protoplasm or used to release energy.
Egestion
Egestion if the removal of undigested matter from the body
