reproductie hormones - ovarian Flashcards
FSH (follicle stimulating hormone)
- stimulates primary to become secondary follicle
- inhibited by P (FSH increases when P decreases)
LH (luteinizing hormone)
stimulates estrogen production from theca and granulosa cells of follicle
surge in LH causes ovulation and then formation of corpus luteum from remnants
of follicle
in follicular phase - estrogen from secondary follicle rises for a few days ⇒ LH release (via GnRH) ⇒ stim. follicle to ⇑ E secretion etc (positive feedback) ⇒
leads to LH surge
luteal phase – progesterone inhibits LH release
estrogen
-required for ovulation
-development of sex characteristics
-stimulates growth of an maintains endometrium
-stimulates bone growth during puberty and later in life (18-20) closure of epiphyses
progesterone
-form corpus luteum
-prepares uterus for pregnancy
