Repro Flashcards
What sort of epithelium covers the ovary?
Simple cuboidal or squamous
What is the tunica albuginea?
Dense, white fibrous connective tissue forming an irregularly arranged network.
What cells are present in the connective tissue and resemble smooth muscle cells? Hint: spindle shaped
Stromal cells
Describe a primordial follicle.
Primordial follicles consist of a primary oocyte surrounded by a single layer of squamous epithelial (follicular) cells.
What changes are seen in a primary follicle vs a primordial follicle?
In a primary follicle, the primary oocyte has increased in size and is surrounded by a single layer of cuboidal to columnar follicular cells.
Describe a secondary follicle.
A secondary follicle has a stratified layer of follicular cells surrounding the oocyte and a glycoprotein zona pellucida between the plasma membranes of the oocyte and the follicular cells.
