Representing the formulae of organic compounds Flashcards
What is molecular formula?
Shows the number and types of atoms of each element present in a molecule
What are 2 negatives of molecular formula?
1) Doesn’t show how the atoms are joined together
2) Different molecules can have the same molecular formula
What is the molecular formula of ethanol?
C2H6O
What is empirical formula?
The simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element in a compound
What empirical formula do all alkenes have and what does this mean?
CH2 - there will always be twice as many hydrogens as carbons
Glucose has the molecular formula C6H12O6, what is its empirical formula?
CH2O
What is general formula?
The simplest algebraic formula for any member of a homologous series
What can the general formula be used for?
Generating the molecular formula of any member of that homologous series by substituting n with the number of carbon atoms
General formula of alkanes
CnH2n+2
General formula of alkenes
CnH2n
General formula of alcohols
CnH2n+1OH
General formula of carboxylic acids
CnH2nO2
General formula of ketones
CnH2nO
What is displayed formula?
Shows how all the atoms are arranged and all the bonds between them
What is structural formula?
Uses the smallest amount of detail necessary to show the arrangement of the atoms in a molecule
