Nomenclature of organic compounds Flashcards
What is IUPAC?
An organisation founded in 1919 by chemists from industry and education who recognised the need of standardisation for the names of compounds
What can hydrocarbons be classified as?
Aliphatic, alicyclic, and aromatic
What are aliphatic hydrocarbons?
Linear chains - carbon atoms are joined to each other in unbranched (straight) or branched chains, or non-aromatic rings
What are alicyclic hydrocarbons?
carbon atoms are joined to each other in ring (cyclic) structures, with or without branches
What are aromatic hydrocarbons?
Some or all of the carbon atoms are found in a benzene ring
What are the 3 homologous series of aliphatic hydrocarbons?
Alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes
What are alkanes?
Hydrocarbons that contain only single bonds (saturated)
What are alkenes?
Hydrocarbons with a double carbon-carbon bond (unsaturated)
What are alkynes?
Hydrocarbons that contain a carbon-to-carbon triple bond (unsaturated)
What does the stem of a name indicate?
The number of carbon atoms in the longest continuous chain in the molecule
What does a prefix of a name indicate?
The presence of side chains or functional groups
What does a suffix of a name indicate?
Functional groups
What suffix do alkanes have?
-ane
