Representing Data Flashcards
What is a multiple bar chart?
Bar chart showing the relationship between different values of data in the same category
What is a composite bar chart?
Bar chart where each bar is divided into multiple sections of data
How do we find the size of each category in a pie chart?
Frequency of category/total frequency x 360
What is a comparative pie chart?
- Two circles are drawn with areas proportional to the two total frequencies - these charts are more representative of the total frequency
- To compare frequencies, compare areas
- To compare proportions, compare individual angles
What formula is used to construct a comparative pie chart?
r1 = r2 x (√F1/ √F2) and vice versa
- where r1/F1 is the radius/total frequency of the first circle
- where r2/F2 is the radius/total frequency of the second circle
What is a population pyramid?
A chart showing the age groups in a population
What is a chloropleth map?
Map showing shaded regions of a geographical area
What is a histogram?
- A bar chart that represents continuous rather than categorical data.
- There is no gap between the bars.
- Shows how data is distributed across class intervals
What is a frequency polygon?
Lines drawn joining the midpoints of the bars of a histogram
What is cumulative frequency?
A running total of the frequencies of each class interval
- Discrete data: cumulative step polygon
- Continuous data: cumulative frequency curve
How do we draw a cumulative frequency curve?
Plot the c.f (y) at the top boundary of every class interval
