Interpreting Data Flashcards
1
Q
What is the shape of a distribution?
A
The shape formed by the data points on a graph
2
Q
What is positive skew?
A
When most of the data values are at the lower end (closer to 0; left leaning)
3
Q
What is negative skew?
A
When most of the data values are at the upper end (closer to the highest number; right leaning)
4
Q
What is symmetrical skew?
A
No skew at all so there is a normal distribution
5
Q
What might make diagrams misleading? (5)
A
- Scales that don’t start at 0
- Scales that don’t increase uniformly distort the shape of the distribution
- Lines that are too thick are hard to read
- Axes without labels
- Graphs and charts without keys
