What is Stuart Hall’s theory?
The media works on stereotypes, and often create them in the first place
Exam: Think about who has constructed these representations. Women = weaker, Balck people = criminals
What is David Guantlet’s theory? 2 parts
Part 1: We use the media to create our own identities
Part 2: We now have diversity in the media, therefore, we see different types of genders and sexualities, overall meaning we don’t just see traditional gender roles
What is Van Zoonen’s theory? 4 parts
Feminist theory:
Part 1: Gender is a social construct (constructed by lived experience)
Part 2: Ideas of gender have changed throughout the years, need to look at the time and culture to understand the gender roles
Part 3: Women are objectified in the media (men are usually making the media product)
Part 4: Men’s bodies are seen as a spectacle because they have achieved it but women’s body is seen as something to lust over

- feminism is a struggle to end patriarchy
- feminism is a political commitment rather than a lifestyle choice
- Gender, as well as Class and Ethnicity, affect the amount you are discriminated against
What is Judith Butler’s theory?
Gender performativity:
gender is a social construct, women have rituals that make them female like wearing makeup for example. The media helps us create these identities.
What is Paul Gilroy’s theory?
Post-Colonial Theory:
Postcolonialism means when countries take over other countries. When Britain took over other countries years ago, it still has an effect now as we still see white people more powerful than ethnic minorities. They are dehumanized.

This refers to the under-representation of certain groups within the mass-media.
