Anadiplosis
A kind of repetition in which the last word or phrase of one sentence or line is repeated at the beginning of the next.
EX. For I have loved long, I crave reward, Reward me not unkindly: think of kindness
Alliteration
The repetition of initial identical consonant sounds or an vowel sounds in successive or closely associated syllables. EX. The furrow followed free.
Anaphora
One of the devices of repetition, in which the same expression (word or words) is repeated at the beginning of two or more lines, clauses, or sentences. Also known as epanaphora,
EX. As I ebb’d with the ocean of life,
As I wended the shores I know,
Assonance
Generally, patterning of vowel sounds without regards to consonants.
EX.Knee deep in the salt marsh.
Chiasmus
A pattern in which the second part is balanced against the first but with the parts reversed.
EX. Flowers are lovely, love is flowerlike. Also known as antistrophe.
Conosance
The relation between words in which the final consonants in the stressed syllables agree but the vowels that precede them differ.
EX. I have given heaven seven mean sane chances.
Epanalepsis
The repetition at the end of a clause of a word or phrase that occurred at
its beginning.
EX. Blood hath brought blood, and blows have answer’d blows
Epistrophe
repetition of a word or expression at the end of successive phrases, clauses, sentences, or verses especially for rhetorical or poetic effect
EX. of the people, by the people, for the people
Ploce
A kind of repetition whereby different forms and senses of a word are “woven” through an utterance.
EX - And mark in every face I meet
Marks of weakness, marks of woe
Polyptoton
The repetition in close proximity of words that have the same roots.
EX. The Greeks are strong and skillful in their strength.
