Renewable & Non-Renewable Sources of Energy Flashcards
Name a renewable energy
Wind, solar, wave, hydroelectric, biofuel
Name a non-renewable energy
Oil, Coal, Natural Gas, Nuclear
What is meant by the term finite?
It will run out (finish)
Name the process used to split crude oil up into useful products
Fractional Distillation
How is coal formed?
over millions of years from plants dying and falling into swamps. Layers of vegetation and mud build up forming layers which compresses the plants forming coal. The plants do not decay because there is no oxygen.
How is Oil/Natural Gas formed?
Millions of years ago, small plants and animals fell to the bottom of the sea. Layers of mud and sediment were washed over them, putting them under lots of pressure on the decaying organic matter. This pressure, along
with the heat from surrounding rocks, changed the material into crude oil and gas.
Name a risk associated with Nuclear
Can leak radiation
Name a risk associated with Biofuels
Establishing farms destroys habitats
Name a risk associated with Wind
Visual pollution of landscape
Name a risk associated with Hydro
Can cause flooding in surrounding area
Name a risk associated with Fossil Fuels
Produces greenhouse gases when burned
Name a benefit associated with Nuclear
No CO2 emissions
Name a benefit associated with Biofuels
Renewable if crops replanted
Name a benefit associated with Wind
Infinite energy supply
Name a benefit associated with Hydro
Also creates water reserves
