Renewable Advantages and Disadvantages Flashcards
What are the advantages of using solar energy?
There is an infinite supply from the sun, there are no emissions of greenhouse gases and it is suitable for remote areas.
What are the disadvantages?
It is very weather dependent, there are high initial costs for installation and large areas of land are needed for solar farms.
What are the advantages of using wind energy?
There is an infinite supply from the wind, there are no emissions of greenhouse gases and land under wind turbines can be used for farming.
What are the disadvantages?
The wind is unpredictable, it can be an eyesore and it creates noise pollution and potential harm to wildlife.
What are the advantages of using hydroelectric power?
It is a reliable source of energy where there is water, there are no emissions of greenhouse gases and it can control flooding and provide water storage.
What are the advantages of geothermal energy?
It is a reliable and constant energy source and there are no emissions of greenhouse gases.
What are the disadvantages?
It can destroy habitats and displace communities and is expensive to build dams and it is limited to suitable locations.
What are the disadvantages?
It is limited to areas with volcanic activity and drilling can cause small earthquakes.
What are the advantages of biomass energy?
It uses organic waste, reducing landfill. It is a carbon-neutral process if managed sustainably.
What are the disadvantages?
It can lead to deforestation if not managed properly and it releases carbon dioxide when burned and it is less efficient than fossil fuels.
